Travertine’s having a moment again, and honestly we don’t think it ever really left. That warm, pitted, sun-baked look works in a way that a lot of stone-look tiles just don’t, because travertine has actual history to it, formed slowly around mineral springs over thousands of years. You can see that in the surface. No two tiles read quite the same.
The tricky bit is that “travertine” now covers a huge range of products, from full porcelain replicas through to the real, quarried stone. We wanted to walk through the options we’ve got in, because the right choice really depends on where it’s going and how much maintenance you’re up for.
Vein cut vs cross cut, and why it matters
Travertine forms in layers, a bit like a very slow-cooked lasagne of mineral deposits. How the block gets sliced determines the pattern you end up with.
Vein cut travertine is sliced parallel to those natural layers, so you get long, linear streaks running through the tile, similar to the grain in timber. It suits a more directional, architectural look and works beautifully laid running-bond on a floor where you want the eye drawn through the room.
Cross cut travertine is sliced across the layers instead, which gives you those cloudy, almost rosette-like patterns you’ve probably seen in older Mediterranean interiors. It’s softer and less directional, and it’s the one we reach for when a client wants texture and depth without the tile pulling focus in one direction.
Both are available in our large-format porcelain travertine-look range, in 600×600 and 600×1200 sizes, so you can pick the pattern that suits the room before you’ve even decided on real stone versus porcelain.
Porcelain that actually nails the look
We’ll be upfront: a lot of porcelain “stone-look” tile doesn’t hold up next to the real thing. But some of the Italian porcelain we’ve brought in genuinely gets it right, the pitting, the tonal drift, the slightly chalky matte finish, all replicated without a drop of sealer required! For a shower floor or a full wet area where you want zero maintenance fuss, this is where we point most clients. The depth of colour on some of these slabs is something else!
Beyond beige
Travertine’s default mental image is that classic warm ivory, but we’re seeing gorgeous darker options come through too, deep reds and rich browns that behave more like a feature stone than a neutral backdrop. These work well as an accent wall or a vanity splashback where you actually want the tile to do some talking, paired back with simpler fittings so it doesn’t compete with itself.
Mosaics, subways, and flutes
If you are looking for texture, mosaics are the easy way in. We’ve got travertine-look tumbled mosaics in porcelain for low-fuss application, plus real travertine in subway format, square mosaics and fluted profiles, all in natural stone rather than the printed look.
Flutes in particular have been popping up on powder room feature walls a lot lately, and travertine’s soft, sandy tone suits that shadow-and-light effect better than a lot of other stones would. You will also fall in love with our travertine basins!
What about outdoors and around the pool?
This is where real, natural travertine earns its keep. It’s naturally porous, which sounds like a downside until you realise that’s exactly what makes it grippy underfoot when wet, tumbled and honed finishes in particular hold traction well around a pool deck. It also stays noticeably cooler than porcelain or concrete pavers in full sun, which matters a lot more than people expect once summer actually hits. The one thing to steer clear of outdoors is a polished finish, which sacrifices that grip for shine, not a trade worth making beside a pool.
Inside, natural travertine works well in bathrooms too, just factor in sealing every six to twelve months to protect it from moisture and staining.
