Alfresco & Outdoor Entertaining: Choosing Tiles That Work Hard and Look Beautiful

If there’s one thing North Queenslanders know how to do, it’s live outdoors. Our alfresco areas, pool surrounds and entertaining spaces are genuine extensions of our homes, and they deserve just as much love as the interiors.

The good news? The world of outdoor tiling has never been more exciting. Large-format porcelain, stunning natural stone, creative pool coping and waterline tiles that go way beyond the expected — let’s take a look at what’s possible.

Large Format Porcelain: Go Big, Go Beautiful

Large-format porcelain – think 600x600mm, 800x800mm or larger – brings a seamless, contemporary look to alfresco areas and pool surrounds that smaller formats simply can’t match. Fewer grout lines mean less maintenance and a cleaner, more open visual.

Porcelain is also incredibly practical for outdoor use in North Queensland. It’s dense, non-porous and handles everything our tropical climate throws at it — intense sun, heavy downpours and high humidity included.

One important thing to consider when choosing any outdoor tile is colour and tone. In our North Queensland sun, lighter-toned tiles stay significantly more comfortable underfoot on exposed floors and pool surrounds than darker options. It’s a small decision that makes a big difference on a 35-degree day!

And always make sure your tile has an appropriate slip rating for outdoor and wet areas – it’s one of the most important boxes to tick, and something we’re always happy to talk you through in the showroom.

Natural Stone Pavers: Raw Beauty That Ages Gracefully

There’s something undeniably special about natural stone. It has character, warmth and a sense of permanence that no manufactured product can fully replicate, and for outdoor entertaining areas, pool surrounds and garden paths, it looks absolutely gorgeous.

Whether you love the pale, cool tones of limestone, the earthy warmth of sandstone or the drama of travertine, there’s a natural stone that will complement your home beautifully.

One thing to keep in mind: natural stone is more porous than porcelain and more susceptible to staining, so it’s worth thinking about your environment. If you’ve got a fruiting tree nearby that the bats will get into, for example, natural stone is probably not the best choice for that area. Chosen in the right setting and sealed properly, though, it’s a stunning investment that only gets better with age.

Pool Coping: The Detail That Makes or Breaks the Whole Look

Pool coping is the finishing detail that frames the entire pool area and when it’s done well, it elevates everything. We carry a huge range at Willow Tile Co, from classic to contemporary.

Bullnose coping tiles offer a smooth, rounded edge that’s comfortable to sit on and gives a clean profile to the pool edge – a timeless choice that works across a wide range of styles.

Drop face coping tiles create a seamless contemporary, creating a real sense of quality and finish that takes the whole pool to another level.

And our current favourite? A 50x400mm limestone-look coping tile that is absolutely show-stopping. That long, low format paired with a contemporary limestone finish creates a pool edge that looks architectural, sophisticated and completely beautiful.

Waterline Tiles: Think Beyond Blue Glass Mosaics

Glass mosaics in ocean blue are a classic – and still gorgeous in the right setting. But the waterline is your opportunity to do something really special and unexpected.

Porcelain tiles have opened up a whole new world of creative possibilities here. A checkerboard waterline in crisp blue and white is playful and unique. A vertical subway tile in a soft white or warm sand tone has an almost Italian villa quality – subtle, but beautiful. These kinds of details are what make a pool feel truly custom.

One really important note: not every tile is suitable for pool use. Some mosaic backings will actually dissolve when submerged in pool water, so always make sure whatever you’re considering is pool rated before you fall in love with it. It’s an easy thing to check – just ask us!

Come in and chat with us about the options. You might be surprised how achievable a truly unique waterline can be.
